The past week highlighted a shift from technology-led ageing solutions to community-integrated innovation.
1. Age-Friendly Communities Move from Policy to Practice (Spain) The 3rd World Congress of Age-friendly Cities and Communities (San Sebastián, 16–18 June) showcased innovations linking housing, mobility, social participation and digital inclusion. Notable themes included co-design with older adults, AI-supported social participation and ageing-in-place ecosystems that connect health, social care and community services. 2. Digital Resilience Becomes a New Ageing Policy Priority (Germany) The Ageing with Tech Festival 2026 in Hamburg focused on strengthening digital resilience among people aged 50+. Rather than promoting new devices, the emphasis was on empowering older adults to navigate digital services independently and safely—a growing prerequisite for access to healthcare and social support. 3. AI-Supported Dementia Care Advances Toward Real-World Use (UK) CrossSense, winner of the Longitude Prize on Dementia, continues to attract attention for its AI-enabled smart glasses. The system provides contextual prompts and memory support through an adaptive assistant, aiming to help people with early-stage dementia maintain independence longer. Pilot implementation is expected later this year. Reference: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2026/mar/18/ai-smart-glasses-1m-prize-technology-dementia
The strongest innovations are no longer standalone technologies but integrated solutions combining digital tools, community participation and person-centred support.
